  11. Riasanovsky's opus is a fairly straightforward attempt at a
  12. comprehensive history of Russia.  Separate (and fairly self-contained)
  13. sections cover Kievan, Appanage, Muscovite, Imperial and Soviet Russia.
  14. The basic structure is a series of roughly chronological chapters
  15. covering the political and military history of a period, followed by
  16. chapters on its art/architecture/culture, religion, social history,
  17. and economics.  This is all fairly standard stuff, but Riasanovsky
  18. presents a nice balance between the different approaches and his
  19. account is eminently readable.  The text is plentifully provided
  20. with maps and there are twenty four pages of attractive black and
  21. white photographs.  There is a structured list of suggestions for
  22. further reading in addition to the bibliography.

  24. The coverage of Soviet Russia is now out of date, of course, with so
  25. much in the way of additional information having been revealed during
  26. the last decade; if that is what you are chiefly interested in then you
  27. will want the recent fifth edition.  Since I was most curious about the
  28. earlier history, I was happy to find that the mid point of the volume
  29. fell as far back as 1800.
